MLPD is a full-service police department, providing 24-hour-a-day response to all matters, including those that are not strictly “police problems.” The department is forecasting three vacancies (one lateral transfer and two retirements) in 2026 that it is not planning to replace due to citywide budget cuts. It is important to maintain staffing so the department can continue to provide these services that make Moses Lake a great place to live. A 0.1% sales tax increase ($1 on every $1,000 spent) is one of the most equitable ways to maintain vital funding for the police department. As a sales tax, it does not apply to groceries or gasoline, and the burden is shared broadly, including by visitors, shoppers, and those who live outside city limits, all of whom use city services and roads, but don’t pay Moses Lake property taxes.
