For Safety and Smoother Travel, Vote Yes on Proposition 1 What is it? The Transportation Benefit District is a fund voted for by Mount Vernon citizens that pays for transportation improvements, and only transportation improvements. It’s 0.2% of the sales tax we are paying now, so thousands of tourists and visitors to our city contribute to it. Voters approved it ten years ago and the city is simply asking us to continue to support it, at the same rate, for the next ten years. What has it given us? District funds have been used as necessary matching funds for state and federal grants. Matched grants have turned $12 million dollars into nearly $27 million dollars in state and federal grants. Those funds have paid for the widening of College Way/I-5 interchange, the Hoag Road/LaVenture intersection traffic light, resurfacing of 18th St, as well as Freeway Drive improvements. Mount Vernon has been able to overlay about 14 miles of city streets, improve 436 crosswalks and curbs, update or replace city sidewalks, and accomplish significant design work for future city road projects. The life-saving Fir/30th St intersection 4-way stop is just another example of a project paid for with Transportation Benefit District funds. Every Transportation Benefit District dollar has been spent on advancing infrastructure, making driving and walking safer and smoother. Vote for safety and smooth travel. Vote “Yes” on Proposition One.
